What is “Popping”?

Popping was born in the USA in the early 70’ and evolved into a phenomenon with other elements like Miming, boogaloo, Roboting, Waving, Sliding (a.k.a. Moonwalk introduced by Michael Jackson), tutting and many more, which all contribute to the illusionary characteristics of the dance.

All these elements got popularized over time and became ingrained into society. Nevertheless, the popping dance style in its entireness, is still by far not as much globally recognized as its elements and is often referred to as “Robot Dance”…

THE CONCEPT

Our event, Planet Pop'N, serves as a key opportunity for the local and international dance community to come together and connect regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity. We prioritize promoting healthy competition through our use of the Kozenpro judging system and constantly seek to bring fresh formats and concepts to the competition.

Our unique pre-selection process has a "club-like" vibe and uses a cypher format (jam in circles) to create an intimate and energetic atmosphere. We also explore new and innovative competition formats to challenge dancers in exciting ways, encouraging them to tap into their authentic potential.

The viral online challenge #dancelikearobot was created to raise awareness of the dance style Popping among the general audience. Its goal is to introduce Popping to the general public through one of its well-known elements - the “robot dance”. The winner of #dancelikearobot challenge gets the opportunity to get flown out to Eindhoven to open Planet Pop’N World Finals with a special showcase.

To foster community engagement, we organize several get-togethers throughout the year called Planet Pop'N The Jam. These events bring together local and international dancers, providing a platform for them to connect and exchange ideas. Along with opportunities for socializing, we also offer a workshop suitable for dancers of all levels, aimed at promoting growth and skill development within the community.
